How to use your Samsung A900 as a modem

I am passing along my step-by-steps for using your A900 as a modem. It works perfectly for me with a standard Vision plan and no Phone as Modem plan. I'm getting download speeds of 230kbps. Thanks a million to all for your help and suggestions!

Do not download Sprint's Connection Manager!

1. Download the modem driver package from http://www.samsungtelecom.com/driver...l=SPH-A900.zip

2. Run setup.exe and install it

3. Disable the phone's modem NAI by selecting MENU > # > 1 > 0 > 040793 > 9 > off > ok

4. Restart your phone then connect it to your laptop via bluetooth or data cable.

5. Create a New Connection (using WinXP) by selecting Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections > File > New Connection > Next > Next

6. Select "Set up my connection manually" > Next > Next

7. Enter the name of the ISP which will be "SprintPCS" and click on Next

8. Enter #777 and click on Next

9. Uncheck "make this the default connection" and click on Next

10. Check "add shortcut to my desktop" and you're done!

With the phone still connected, double click the SprintPCS shortcut on your desktop, click on Properties and make sure the SAMSUNG CDMA modem is selected.

While you're in Properties, why not tweek the settings a bit.. with the CDMA modem selected, click on Configure and set the max. speed to 921600 kbps.

You should be doing a lot better than 230kbps with Power Vision tethering.

Does this method bypass the Sprint "monitoring" of using phones as modems? I was under the impression they were going to start nailing people for doing this....

No, they have the ability to track your phone's ip address if they choose to. Be careful.

That's as fast as I typically connect at as well - what is your tether speed through USB?

USB 1.1 and 2.0 are way fast enough. They wouldn't slow it down at all.

Yeah, I agree - so why are we only able to get 230kb/sec? What kind of rates do you get? And yes, I maxed out the speed setting under my Samsung CDMA connection.

I don't see that ip tracking could be a problem. Any thing you can do on a tethered pc you can do right on the phone and is "legit" under your vision or power vision plan. Case in point, the Opera mini browser. This application lets you visit any regular web page on your handset and should show up exactly the same to sprint as if you went there on a tethered pc (assuming nai is disabled of course).
