Considering dumping the Epic for Evo
When I got my Epic, I went in for an Evo but there weren't any in stock and they talked me into the Epic. I had reservations about the size (thickness) due to the keyboard. The screen is big enough that the onscreen keyboard is pretty good, and I don't see the need for the slide out. But, I went with the Epic anyway.
Well, I'm not very pleased. The ergonomics, in my opinion, are really bad. The power button is on the right side, pushing it makes the keyboard want to slide out and holding the opposite site to prevent that causes you to hit the volume up/down buttons. The headphone and more importantly power cord goes in the top (I know the Evo headphone does too) and that makes it kind of hard to talk on when it is plugged in. The whole thing feels cheap, as does the slide out keyboard (which is developing scratches on the keys from sliding in & out). I had an HTC Touch and Touch Pro before and was very happy with HTC hardware. So, what would I not like about the Evo from my Epic? Would I notice the (supposedly) slower speed? I'm getting about 2 days of battery life on the Epic (with 4g off), would I get that with the Evo? Anything else I might be frustrated with? |

Wirelessly posted (My Evo: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; PC36100 Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)
I barely read through your post but I'm sure you'll hate the battery life on the evo.. even if you rooted it |

I don't know about the lag since I've never messed with an Epic. The fact that it WASN'T an HTC turned me off of it. And the fact that I had a Touch Pro and barely used the keyboard was another factor. I just wouldn't use the slide out and didn't want to mess with the keyboard sliding unintentionally.
As far as battery life goes...it's ok. Not great but not terrible (for me at least). I'm sitting at 66% after about 12 hours. I've used the data some and sent texts and made phone calls. Nothing too heavy though. That's pretty much normal use for me. And that's on the rooted (but no adjustments) stock ROM. I'm sure if I bought SetCPU and fiddled with that it would get better but for now it works for me. A lot of it depends on how you use your phone ie data usage, signal strength, etc. I say if you're within your 30 days take that Epic back and get the EVO. It's a hell of a phone even with it's few drawbacks. I honestly can't think of another phone even on any other carrier that I'd want more than the EVO.

i played with an epic for a night. i liked the phone, and the screen is sweet, i like the evo alot better. the epic did feel cheap in my hands, and the slide out keyboard felt like it would eventually break. really glad i got to play with the epic before i went out and bought it.

Same here. Haven't ever used or even seen an EPIC in person. I got my EVO the first night it was available, and could not be happier.
Battery life could be better, but is definitely manageable. With the right settings, and keeping all radios which aren't being used off, I can get through a day of moderate to heavy use. For some the size of the EVO is just too big. So that's something to consider. Otherwise I really cannot think of another major drawback with this phone!

Being an owner of the evo and epic concurrently the speed difference is somewhat noticable the epic is just zippy as heck that hummingbird processor really does hum along nicely, you wont see 2 days out of the Evo unless you root, custom kernel, and tweak it alot.
other then that in the end i sided with the evo, sense is just that awesome (and yes that was my deciding factor lol)

I have the Epic and the Evo. If I were you play with the Evo first before you dump the Epic.
I like the Epic, and I like the Evo. I don't mind being stuck with either. The Epic is a fine phone.

I wanted a 6700, but once I saw the price tag, that just about did it for me lol.

I never actually wanted the first Touch Pro. That was kind of a 'get me through til upgrade time' phone that I picked up off of a friend after I 'accidentally' broke my Blackberry. But I tell you...I wanted Sprint to get that Diamond 2 more than almost anything. And they let me down. ha!

We also have both. I don't see the Epic being any faster even without rooting, but then again I don't play any games that require a particularly fast processor. It's good enough for Angry Birds
For web browsing it's about equal. The Evo feels more solid to me and the Epic looks more pixelated to me, but the screen is MUCH brighter on the Epic, which is really nice. Sense vs Touchwiz to me isn't an issue either way because you can change the look easily enough. |
