Newbie Question: Using 3G Network

Sorry I am a complete newbie when it comes to smartphone. I have a SERO plan and recently I got a HTC Touch Pro 2 which is my first 3G phone. I activated it online and everything went smoothly. However the data connection is kinda slow. The iconology of my phone is somewhat confusing. Sometimes it shows the data status as "Ev" and sometimes "1x," which according to the user mannual mean "a high speed connection to the Sprint Mobile Broadband network (EVDO) or a Sprint 1xRTT data connection is available." So my question is do I have to set up anything on my phone to use the 3G network or does the phone get on 3G automatically when it is available? Thanks!

I would assume the Ev = EVDO and the 1x = 1xRTT.

You must live out in the boonies.

How long ago did you get the phone?? You could get a better phone, like the Samsung Transform for only $10/mo a month, BTW.

Whenever it shows EV, you are using 3G. When it shows 1x, you are using 2G (or 2.5G, maybe).

The coverage map indicates that

"Sprint coverage - signal strength varies".

I'm presuming that you live in a mountainous area. Your area is not the typical green shade seen elsewhere.

so with the $30 old SERO, you buy a Tp2, you can use 3g without paying extra?

that's correct supposedly. After some research online I think the problem is that my Ev session isnt authenticated properly and that's why it is switching back and forth between Ev and 1x. Gonna call tech support first thing in the morning

Yes, SERO includes access to 3G in the plan price.

(pedantic) if you're using real 2G, you'd know it, since it only goes at 14kbs... and requires a difference authentication protocol... 1xrtt is technically 3G (and Sprint first marketed Vision/1xrtt as 3G, though with EVDO, *that* became 3G), but most folk probably call it 2.5G, even though that label has no meaning...

Yeah, I thought there was some weird fine print to those terms. I just call it 2.5G because it's not quite as slow as 2G, but it's not quite as fast as EVDO, which is become synonymous with 3G in the Sprint world.

hegel, your phone is capable of both speeds and will use the higher speed when it has a strong enough signal to do so. no need to call tech support, that i can think of.

when it says 1x it's connected to the slower speed, EV = EVDO = 3G = faster.

Update the PRL and see if that helps.
