Yes you can with a 3rd party app. PDANet works pretty well. http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php

You can, of course, also turn the Hero into a WiFi hotspot and connect your laptop to that

Get Android Wifi Teather!!! It's an awesome application and it's free. You have to be rooted though. Like they said your phone will be a wireless hotspot and you and other people can connect to it.

Do you have to pay sprints tethering fees when you do this?
And by rooting I am assuming you mean installing a rootkit on the phone so that you can take full control? How much work is required to do this for the htc hero? Also I'm still debating whether or not to get a htc hero, so if they lock down newer revisions of it I'd like to know. Last edited by AlphaWolf; 12-29-2009 at 09:57 PM. |

Yes rooting will give you more control over the phone. There are a few different ways of doing it but they can all be done within 10-15 minutes.

Thought that rooting the phone would be a pain but within 10 minutes was rooted and had wifi tethering installed, tried pdanet but just got tired from the constant disconnects even in perfect evdo coverage areas now with the wifi tethering it's fast and a whole heck of a lot more reliable.

Sounds good!
I'm only concerned about hardware modifications. While I have done custom SMT modifications myself, they are the most frustrating because when something goes wrong it is so hard to figure out where exactly it has gone wrong, and recovering from a mistake can often be impossible. Software modifications are easy though, and 99% of the time when you screw up you have some means of resetting back to factory defaults and starting over from scratch. I don't mind if a software modification took several hours to do, just so long as its doable

I'm wondering, if we can do this, is there anything stopping us from being able to use some kind of skype app in the phone?

I personally prefer a program called EasyTether over PdaNet. I ran into issues with PdaNet. Because PdaNet uses the same driver as HTC Sync, I wasn't able to mount the memory card and surf the web while tethered. Also, I had issues with the driver restarting, resulting in random disconnects, and i only had that issue while using pdanet. And, EasyTether is about a third of the price of PdaNet ($10 compared to $30)

I loaded PDANet. The first time I connected, it appeared to go well - didn't stay logged on long. Now each time I login, I get disconnected and an error says my vision password may be incorrect. Anyone else have this problem - know how to get around it?? I appreciate any help I can get.

Shut the phone/computer down, reboot and do not plug into the computer until it is fully up and logged on. Connect phone, turn on pda net let it load THEN connect from the computer.

I used pdanet free version with no problems but I got a message saying I had to buy the $23.99 version (on sale for $18.99). I bought it but I see nothing in the app market but the free version. I tried to download it from Junefabris website and keep getting the message on my phone: "Data call failure. Error code 67 registration failure. Your PCS vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again". When I email Junefabrics they take 5-7 days to respond with answers that don't address the problem. I have wasted a month trying to get this to work and I am about ready to give up because Pdanet is selling a product they don't support. I used the free version for over a month with no problems at all. Please help.
