The dec. 11 release date is simply the google drop date. Carriers/manufacturers still have to customize for their devices... And the leaked rom is 2.0, and GSM only.

Care to put some money on whether we see it before the end of the year, or even before the end of January? I'm a big fan of free money.. let me know.

Hopefully, that will be the Bravo on Sprint. I have decided to wait on it. My contract is up on one week.

That 2.1 rom must be brand new, all the roms I had seen were 2.0..

And yeah, they're working on it for CDMA, but as of now it's not even remotely close to functional.

My point was just that an official release is far from imminent, which the guy I responded to had claimed.

I hadn't seen anything stating that it was just the GSM version. Thanks for the info, though. I was only aware that there was a 2.1 ROM leaked with Sense UI already running on it.

Yeah,it was released for the GSM version of the hero, and didn't work on the CDMA version at all... through some serious hacking, some of the custom rom developers have gotten voice and sms to work, but not much else.

I've been wanting to try out the Android platform for some time now and actually got the chance to play with the Hero for about two weeks. I've got a Pre right now while it's got promise I'm wanting something else. Considering I've gone through four smartphones in less than two years it's safe to say I get bored easily.

The Hero felt like it needed a little bit more horsepower under the hood but I did love the Sense UI. I've not played with the Moment for more than a couple of minutes in a Sprint store but I've been reading too many bad things about it.

I'm due to an upgrade from Sprint in February so I'm going to wait and see what the rumor mills start spitting out over the next month or so. I was reading about the HTC Bravo today and that phone has some stats making me drool!

Two things I use my smartphones for more than anything else is mobile web access, which with the browser on the Pre is fabulous, and reading e-books, which ain't so great on the Pre. Music and podcast listening is a close third.

What's the e-book ecosystem on Android like? Anyone know or have any experience with that?

I havent messed with it at all, but I would imagine that with the included PDF viewer, it wouldn't be too bad. I'll be loading up some PDFs in a few minutes, I'm posting from my phone, I love the browser. You're right about it feeling like it could use a bit more juice, I've noticed some slowdown now and then, and noticeable lag when typing. Im hoping that whatever the next update is will clear this up.

With HTC releasing 19 new Android-enabled handsets over the next 3 months (yes, some are duplicates on multiple carriers), it's safe to assume a LOT of new Android devices will be hitting the shelves in January and February.

I made the jump to the Hero two weeks ago, and with each passing day I love the phone more and more. Granted, it could be faster, but using Advanced Taskiller to keep non-used applications closed, I have zero sluggishness at all. Every so often I open ATK and kill what I don't want running and the phone runs beautifully.

You said you had issues using the on-screen Hero keyboard in the store...you will continue to have problems until you own the phone, and here's why: there is a Callibration program on the phone that runs you through a tutorial that lets the screen learn how you type on it. When I got the Hero, I went 4 days without Callibrating to see how it went...lots of typo's, but the auto-correction caught 90% of them. THEN I Callibrated...what a difference! The only big thing with Callibrating is to do that tutorial holding the phone the way you will text 99% of the time or it's kind of a bust. So now that mine is Callibrated, if you and I swapped Hero's for a few minutes, we'd both have a hell of a time typing on each other's phones, because we probably use our hands on the screen differently.

The pure customization of the phone is a turn-on as well. I think I've changed the layout of my phone about a dozen times in the last 2 weeks. Maybe it's because this is the first phone I've owned that really allows you to make it look the way YOU want it to look. But that's been a big plus for me.

The Bravo does look sweet, but as stated before, if Sprint gets it, my Hero is pristine and I'll buy the Bravo at full price and ebay my Hero and it will save me a couple hundred bucks. Either way, with so much Android equipment flooding the market, it's going to be a long long time before we're ever "caught up" by making a device purchase.

Hero is a 3.2 inch touchscreen, iirc. I'm pretty sure at least. Web browsing is pretty nice. No scaling/image compression (which means I can finally read my webcomics without having to try to read text through image compression).
