Cooked ROMs Discussion

So I did a quick search and didn't really come across a thread that was a discussion that concentrated on cooked ROMs for our Sprint HTC Touch Vogue. I figured I would bring it up on its own thread (instead of a thread that included discussion on other applications in addition to cooked ROMs), especially since I've taken a great interest in testing cooked ROMs to find the best, most ideal one for my use.

We all know ppcgeeks has a boatload of chefs, but after testing several different ROMs on there, I favor Derek's ROM. Right now Im testing his beta v18, and its never (not even once) given me slowness or freezing problems. I haven't even had to soft reset it yet! I am having a problem with phantom dialing out, actually making phone calls, but since Derek hasnt experienced it on his Touch, he cant assess the problem as of now. Other than that, the ROM is perfect. I hope Cokeman unlocks the new ROM soon so the chefs can implement it and we can start using Rev A and GPS.

Anyone else into using their Touch as a test machine for cooked ROMs?

Try cooking your own. I have one based on DCD's 1.04 kitchen, have been running it for 2 weeks, and it is the best rom I've had on a Sprint device!

How difficult is it to do that? I don't really know much about the process, other than how to unlock on Vista and how to flash the ROM. I'm very tech savvy, but I just don't know if I could stand the trial and error, and the learning curve.

they are progs that allow certain customizations. adding tabs, changing certain icons, applying VERY unique and complicated themes.

but they cost money

I'm very interested in putting a custom ROM on my Touch, but there is just waaaay too much reading involved, even for me. I'm a fast reader, but I can't get my head around all the Touch threads on ppcgeeks.

Could anyone post a link to a ROM that works for them and includes most of the useful Sprint stuff and maybe some extras?

I use this ROM as well and have no problems at all and think my phone great now. Ive had others but the phone would lock up at different times. Not anymore...

Not hard at all for a "savvy" user. There's even a GUI. Download it, read up at PPC Geeks, then give it a shot...it's very satisfying to be "running your own".

is there a process for backing up the basic stuff - contacts, txt messages, documents, etc - and importing them back to the phone after putting on a new rom?

most ppl are already saving that stuff to a mem card anyway and all of your contacts should be activesynced to your pc anyway
