SERO plan question

Hi, I have conflicting reports on this (how surprising!) and would
welcome any clarification. Have been off contract for abt. 10 months with a
SERO F&F 500 Anytime Minute plan and Sanyo MM-9000 phone for a few years.
Great price of about 30/month.

Due to business needs changing, I need to consider a laptop connect card.

When I last looked into this, for some reason the amount I remember being
quoted was something like "an additional $15/month on top of my regular
phone rate" (roughly $30 a month for that). Thus, the total was estimated
at around $50 a month for laptop card+phone with unlimited data.

I called a SERO # to ask and the best rate quoted was $50/month for the card
alone.

Is that known to be the going rate for these things or is there any other
angle whereby I could get the card & phone service for under 50/month?

Just wonderin...

Thanks for your help,

Mike

i've never heard of the deal you're speaking of for the Phone + Data Card. That is the going rate of a data card though. i think what you may be referring to must be something really old, something people had grandfathered in. whatever it is, i don't know if it's available now. man, i want to work at a Sprint store so i can look these things up.

Just upgrade to a WM phone and use WMWifiRouter when you need an internet connection on your laptop...

umm sprint relay is $30. Sprints website isn't clear who is or isn't eligible for the plan only who their target customers are. seems to be the best deal available.

hey, appreciate your time... i'm not familar with sprint relay so i guess i need to google it or something. i am really out of the loop with anything about sprint deals and options- pretty much have just used the 30-a-month phone deal (SERO) and not really needed it for much more than voice calls and checking email but like i say, the needs have changed due to my job and i need to scope out the best deal for laptop access.

Back when the laptop cards were introduced i definitely remember some talk about it only costing 15 a month extra to add that to my SERO phone plan.... and it would give me unlimited broadband on my mac in add. to my existing F&F 500 Sero phone at $30 a month (45-50 a month total)... Like i say "sprint relay" is a new one on me so I'll try to find out what that's about. Thanks again everybody.

you can get a laptop card or get a smart phone and tether to that (its allowed by them) you still will hit the 5gb max data per month limit. i average 3-4gb per month and thats with a lot of internet browsing with a few videos here and there.

if they still had the deal you're talking about I think just about every sero user would have gotten it by now...

The aircard add-on is long gone. Heck it's very hard to get them to even add PAM anymore, they really want you to pay full price for an aircard. I would try to get them to add PAM if you want to stay in the rules, otherwise do like a lot of and just go around it and tether but keep the usage reasonable.

I used to use my WM phone as my primary internet... I used a looot of data and it was never a problem. Way back in the day I asked them if it was okay to tether and they said yeah that was fine. You should be fine to tether... just get a TP2 and go nuts.

Thanks. I'm inclined toward the smartphone/tether - if it's dependable enough to rely on for must-have business use on the road. TP2 is interesting but i'm fanatic about raised keypads ala blackberry so... probably would be looking at whatever sprint BB i could get on SERO that can tether. I assume something current will do this without hassle and I could keep the $30/month plan. Willing to give it a try anyway- Any best-model recommendations for ease of tethering?

Thanks again!

any Windows Mobile phone can do it just fine, if you want ease, purchase PDA Net, a copy of the program goes on the PC and on your phone.

if you don't like a WinMo phone, you can go Blackberry, but w/o a proper PAM plan, you'll have to resort to Tetherberry, or PDA Net. both are great.

my experience w/ PDA Net and HTC Touch Diamond, i got 2.5mbits down, pretty slick.

with 8330 via USB, i got 2.4mbits down

i've noticed it's faster to tether via USB than Bluetooth. also for some reason, might just be my phone but i couldn't tether and charge the Diamond at the same time.

If you go with a BB you are going to need the BIS package. Some have gotten it for free and others for $10. The normal price for it is $30 so YMMV. BB are dirt simple to tether over BT and it can be done over USB with tetherberry. If you live in an area with a high speed connection USB will be faster due to the limited bandwidth of BT.

Thanks again - Was looking at BBs today at Sprint store. (Tour, Curve).

Friendly rep there suggested I might have a problem trying to move up to a smartphone (BB) if I wanted to try to keep my existing SERO F&F500/$30/month Plan (yes i do: )

Not sure what the problem would be(?) In any event I don't want to rush into buying a BB online if it would change my rate. AFAIK - I might need to reapply for an EPRP plan
to do this but would rather keep the plan I've got and use a BB on it.

Re: my last post, is there a 'best number' (or call center) to use in order to get in touch with the right people about this stuff? I have an old one listed as SERO Telesales - it's
been a few years so if anybody's got a suggestion of where to call feel free to post or PM
me. I'd be glad to hear from you and hopefully return a favor in some way down the road.

Thanks again,

Mike
