One of the most asked questions I get with regards to the CLEAR WiMAX service in Austin, Texas is "how far am I from a tower?" Well, now you can check this out for yourself. I have added an app on my site (check profile) that allows you to type in your address, and you will get the distance and bearing to the nearest live tower.

As of today, only Austin information is in there, but the plan is to add San Antonio too. As long as CLEAR sends the data, I will keep it updated. This app would work for any location in the US, so if I can ever wrangle other city info from CLEAR, I will add it too.

I've tested this with quite a few addresses in Austin, and it seems to have all the bugs worked out, but if you see something weird, let me know. Of course, since you only get distance and bearing, you probably won't notice anything wrong unless it tells you something like 516 degrees.

http://www.domain-b.com/industry/tel...clearwire.html

US Wireless broadband provider Clearwire, that provides its ervices in the US and a few European countries, said yesterday that it has raised $1.564 billion in new investment capital from a group of investors to fund its 4G WiMAX network roll out in the US scheduled for next year.

Kirkland, Washington-based Clearwire, which is 51-per cent owned by Sprint Nextel, plans to invest at least $3 billion to build a national WiMAX high-speed wireless network, which includes installing about 20,000 wireless base stations costing approximately $150,000 each.

In the new round of equity financing, Sprint Nextel is the major contributor with $1.176 billion, while Comcast chipped in with $196 million, Time Warner Cable with $103 million, Intel with $50 million, Eagle River with $20 million and Bright House Networks with $19 million. The investment is in exchange for newly issued shares priced at $7.33 per share.

Clearwire will receive approximately $1.057 billion in cash from the equity financing within five business days, $440 million in cash will be funded at a closing which is targeted to be completed by year end 2009, and the remaining $66 million will be funded at a closing which is targeted to be completed during first quarter 2010.

The investors have all pumped in $3.2 billion in Clearwire in a equity raising in the past, but this time Internet giant Google, which had participated in the previous fund raising by Clearwire, preferred to stay away.

Google has since joined hands with Clearwire's rival Verizon Wireless, which has started to market Google Android-based handsets recently, which probably, is the reason as to why Google abstained from the latest Clearwire fundraising.

I went into my local Best Buy yesterday where a Clear representative had a booth setup. While he was not selling services yet, he did have a laptop configured using the Motorola Home Modem. SpeedTest.net resulted in approximately 2.3Mbps down, 0.05Mbps up with latency of 534ms and one bar of signal on the modem. PingTest.net gave the connection a rating of "D". With horrible results like that, I don't see how they are going to avoid a significant number of complaints from customers actually trying to use the service. At this point, I would rather stick with my Sprint 3G connection which seems to have better coverage and much more reliable U/D speeds. A 0.05Kbps upload test is pretty bad and no where near the advertised 1Mbps. Just to make sure my eyes where not deceiving me I ran the test 3 more times on different cities with similar results. I'm assuming the 1 out of 5 lit green bars on the top of the Motorola modem indicated a single bar of signal but since I have not read the manual I really don't know. Until I see regular upload speeds at or around 500 Kbps or more I don't think I will recommend the service to anyone. It's important to note, that my Sprint Palm Pre cell phone had a full 5 bars of service inside the Best Buy which tells me that my 3G phone would have likely crushed that 4G modem in an upload speed test. 0.05Kbps per second upload is just simply unacceptable for any broadband service let alone dial up. While reading numerous reviews displaying slow upload speeds I had always assumed the network upload capabilities were saturated. However, now that I see slow uploads before they have even launched their services it seems to indicate that the tower bandwidth is significantly throttled or there is a major configuration problem. If I can pull down more than 2Mbps I should easily be able to push 1Mbps up in the same location and signal strength. I hope this company get's their act together soon so I can sign up someday.

Okay at my house we have the following devices:

1) My Notebook PC
2) My Mom's Notebook PC
3) Family Desktop PC
4) XBox 360
5) Nintendo Wii

Right now all these devices are connected WIRELESSLY to a Linksys Router. We currently have Time Warner Cable Internet and Phone Service bundled together. However I HATE TWC. Just dumped them for DirecTV and couldn't be happier.

Anyway so I'm in an area where WiMax/Clear will be coming out in November. I'm sorta torn about whether to sign up for Clearwire right now since I know that they will upgrade our equipment to Clear stuff as soon as it rolls around.

However I'm confused about what equipment Clear will actually provide. I just got off talking with a representative for Clear and I'll report what she told me.

Anyways we've got a Linksys WRT610N Router here. She told us that if we got Clear 4G WiMax Service that we could connect the Clear Modem to the Linksys WRT610N AND that provided:

1) The Laptop had the Clear USB Adapter/Modem

OR

2) The Device used an ethernet cable connection to the back of the Linksys Router

That we would be receiving 4G data connection speeds through the Linksys Router. That is we would be getting the 6Mbps download speeds and 1Mbps upload speeds

Now is that correct/right? Or was she lying to me?
